What is a Debit Card?

A debit card, by definition, is a way to use money from a checking account to make a purchase. Less formally? It’s an easy way for you to pay for something without having to visit a branch or an ATM.

Advantages of a Debit Card

There are a lot of advantages of a debit card. Because a debit card is linked to your checking account, you’re spending money you already have, similar to if you were paying with cash. You can make purchases with your debit card everywhere Mastercard is accepted. You can also use your debit card to withdraw money from an ATM. It’s a great way to make sure you have access to your funds wherever you go.

  • Place your card on hold. If you misplace your card, sign in to Online or Mobile Banking and use Santander Instant Card Hold to turn your card off. When you find it, turn it back on.
  • Order new debit cards, activate your personal debit card, and report lost or stolen cards via Online and Mobile banking.
  • Set up and receive customizable text or email alerts that keep you in the know about purchases and ATM transactions made with your debit chip card.
  • Review recent transactions, monitor your balances, and view your statements.

How to Use a Debit Card

Similar to a credit card, you can use a debit card at most stores, as well as to make purchases online or over the phone. Simply swipe your card, insert your debit chip card, or tap your card on a contactless terminal at checkout. You may be required to sign for your purchase or enter your PIN.

You can also enter your card information into form fields when making an online purchase. Although our fraud monitoring team is constantly protecting you, be sure to only make purchases from trusted sources in order to protect your account from identity theft.

Debit Card vs. Credit Card

Visually, a debit card and a credit card are almost indistinguishable, and most can be used in the same places. There are a few key differences:

Debit Card

  • Immediate access to money from your checking account.
  • Can be used to withdraw money from ATMs.
  • No interest charged, unlike a credit card.
  • Could overdraft your checking account or be denied if you have insufficient funds.

Credit Card

  • Pays with funds from a pre-determined line of credit.
  • Defers payment, allowing you to pay at a later date.
  • Interest may be charged on balances.
